Jaisalmer FortJaisalmer Fort is a unique and authentic monument of Rajasthan and it is one of the oldest forts next to Chittorgarh. Built with yellow sand stone, it is the second largest forts of India. The fort lies in one of the largest and dominant cities of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer, which is said to be founded by a Bhatti Rajput ruler, Raja Rawal Jaisal 1, in approx. 1156 A D.

Though there are innumerable historical monuments scattered all over the sands of Jaisalmer city, The Jaisalmer Fort is worth visiting among them. It will grab your attention with its dominating structure. Jaisalmer Fort measures a height of 250 feet and it is formed on three hills. The historic site is also refereed as Sonar Quila (Golden Fort) by locals, as it shines like gold when early morning sunlight and moonlight falls on it.

The unique feature of Jaisalmer Fort is it is the one and only Living Fort in the sub-continent, It is rest place for over 1000 families, whose forefathers settled here some eight Centuries ago. During the tourist season, the ancestral houses transforms to hotels, restaurants and antique shops.

This Two hundred and fifty feet tall golden fort is imposed by a sandstone wall of 30 feet height. It has 99 bastions, in which 92 were constructed between 1633 and 1647. The architectural styles of the fort are Rajput and Islamic. The fort is equipped with good water facility; one fourth of the old city's population depends on it. Ganesh Pol, Akshya Pol, Suraj Pol and Hawa Pol are worth visiting with in the fort.
