Description :

Kalighat Temple is an oldest temple among all temples in Kolkata; it is one of the local temples in Kolkata city of India, this temple is very ancient since 350 years old. It is situated on the bank of river Adi Ganga. This temple was re builted in 1809 and it was renovated in 1971. The original temple was built by Raja Basant Roy, but this is re-builted by Sabarna Roy Chowdhary.


It was recognized as one of the 51 Shakthi peetas in India, it has legend that one of the devotees discovered the falling of light ray and a piece of stone carved as a human toe. From that time this shrine grows into present form.


The main attraction of this temple is the image of goddess Kali, and one can be very excited to see the golden tongue of goddess Kali, the Kali is decorated with gold and silver ornaments. The present Structure of this temple was 200 years ago. The image of goddess is made of black stone.


Most of the people visit this temple during the festivals; few of the festivals are Kali Puja, Durga Puja, New Year Day of Bengali, and more. During these festivals the devotees visit this temple in huge numbers. One can reach this temple by talking local buses and taxies to the Kalighat temple.
