The Marina Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Chennai, India. It was constructed as an Italian- style promenade. It was built during 1881-1886 to connect Fort St. George in the north to Besant Nagar in the south, occupies 13kms. The width of the beach at the widest stretch is 437 m.

Marina is considered as the world\'s second longest urban beach.. It is the most crowded beach in the country and attracts about 30,000 visitors a day during weekdays and 50,000 visitors a day during the weekends and on holidays.

This beach is popular for shops and food stalls run by about 500-odd vendors. During summer months, about 15,000 to 20,000 people visit the beach daily.

In 2004, Tsunami has occurred in Marina Beach and has severely damaged and it was about 6 m which washed away around 206 persons on the beach, most of them were morning joggers and children playing cricket on the beach, including a few tourists. With the assistance of the World Bank, the government built 2,000 temporary Marina beach shelters each measuring 250 sq.ft.

The families and houses were also affected by the tsunami which costs around 172.3 million. However, from the 5th day after the tsunami, normal composition of sand grains appeared to have been restored at different depths.

Bathing and swimming at the Marina Beach can be dangerous as the undercurrent is very turbulent and are legally prohibited. The sea is generally rough and waves are strong.

Opposite of Marina contains an impressive row of Indo-Saracenic buildings which is about 5km stretch. The Marina Beach contains the notable Landmarks like Lighthouse, Anna Memorial, Madras University, The Senate House, Chepauk Palace, Queen Mary’s, MGR Memorial, and Napier Bridge.

The other side of the road houses several historical buildings and institutions including M.A.Chidambaram Cricket Stadium, Chepauk (Chennai), Inspector General of Police Headquarters, Marina Cricket Ground, Marina Swimming Pool, and Dr. Annie Besant Park.

The Marina Beach hosts several events throughout the year. Marina beach is a major tourist attraction of the city.
